25 Jul 2009 July Favorites – Under the Waterfall

This week’s fare comes from a trip I took to Waterfall Park in Independence, Missouri.  I thought this small park which connects to the Bass Pro Shop business is worth a blink and a stroll for the nice landscaping and photo opportunities.

My first matted photo looks out across the small lake in the park which has a paved walking path part way around it, and a view of a little waterfall from which the park gets its name.  I like this composition of water and sky because it does not reveal how close to I-70 this spot is.

The second offering this week is an unusual calendar design which kicks off the start of August page offerings.  This calendar sports a picture of the main waterfall in the park as seen from across the lake.  I also walked up to the falls, but there is only a road which cuts the upper and lower section in half, and it is a bit tricky being on foot with cars buzzing by.

My virtual award design for the week uses a nice sky filled shot looking toward I-70 on the walking path that goes beside the Bass Pro Shop.  This award reminds me that daydreaming is good if it leads to something productive.  After all, it earned me this award and its design.

This design shows how daydreaming can lead to something tangible.

Last on the list for this week, is a matted photo and inspirational plaque made from a photo taken beside the Bass Pro Shop.  I thought this angle looked very inviting and quiet, with the natural elements coming together to compliment the serenity of the inspiration included on the plaque.

18 Jul 2009 July Favorites – Making the World Go Round

Over the past few postings, I have introduced some designs which take advantage of working images onto a spherical shape.  Since I personally found this technique interesting, I thought I would make all my digital creations for this week revolve around the world of spheres.  See what you think of this well rounded approach.

The first item in line is a photo digitally matted and highlighted to accentuate the decorative theme of flowers growing in wagon wheels.  The composition came from Deanna Rose Farmstead in Overland Park.  With the added lighting accents and shadows, the original photo took on new interest and focus for me.  This looks great in a digital picture frame, and will get your friends talking.

Having experimented with another picture, I decided to create a spherical gold tone digital calendar to see how that would look.  I got mixed reviews on this design, but gave a copy of this to a friend to help commemorate his starting a new job.  He thanked me for the sentiment, but I have not seen it on his computer wallpaper yet.  My wife also perked up a bit more than usual to comment on this particular piece as one of her favorites.

Next, I wanted to go spherical with the digital awards idea to see how that worked.  In the past, I used globes on digital plaques for an award, but this time I made the whole thing round.  As I gaze into the depths of this piece of digital magic, I think this is an attention getting award.  Although it is more of a change up piece than a staple, I could see variations on this design appearing in my crystal ball.  The photos for the next two items came from around Overland Park, Kansas.

For my weekly inspirational digital plaque design, I finished the last item with another play on light and shadows, and an embedded message reminding myself not to think too much.  It strikes me that these rounded objects might be nice around the Christmas season as virtual ornaments or unusual seasonal greeting themes.  How do these ideas inspire your own creativity?

11 Jul 2009 July Favorites – Another Angle

Since my last post, I have been tromping around in the woods along the leafy pathways surrounding the Mill Creek Trail in Kansas, which runs through several cities in Johnson County.  The wife and I love to relax by taking long scenic walks, and we had never traveled some of the areas along Mill Creek, so we got busy and did it.  This first offering is a picture we took of a quiet little pasture we passed, occupied by a lone mule that was happily consuming the tall grass.  I thought this digital photo matting treatment came out looking very nice to my eyes.  What do you think?

Next, I decided to use one of my photos from the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, and create an untraditional looking digital calendar cube effect.  This one made a few people take notice, so I may go down this road with several more digital calendar box designs in the months ahead. I am always encouraged by positive feedback to reach out for more unusual presentations.

After making the calendar box, I dreamed up this digital award design which celebrates the benefit of using digital photo technology to save natural materials and energy, while presenting beautiful simulated designs.  I thought I deserved an award for my ground breaking digital photo work, so I went ahead and made myself one.  One of the perks of making awards is putting a few of your own up on the shelf.

My final effort for the week carries forward the cubism into the digital inspirational plaque realms.  This inspired cube design plays well in a digital picture frame and as a screen wallpaper.  Of course the ever enriching inscription about friendship reminds us all not to let our bridges of friendship fall into disrepair due to neglect.  Any time is right to circle back around and refresh an old friendship that might have gotten away from us.

04 Jul 2009 July Favorites – Let Freedom Ring

In this first July posting, I am not so much talking about the Independence Day celebrations, as I am the freedom to find new ways to express yourself with digital creations from Matte Watch.  My first selection for the week is a notable digital plaque creation that reminds people to celebrate their ability to be different.  The photo used in the composition was taken at a Johnson County Kansas softball complex entrance, where this interesting bit of landscaping stood out in its summer glory, posing like a peacock for the picture.  It was the only one of its kind in the area.  The inscription on the plaque was inspired by the shot, proving that it does not matter whether you hunt for a picture to match an inspiration, or an idea to match an image.

My matted photo for the week was a beautiful little bloom from the Master Gardener display at the Deanna Rose Farmstead in Overland Park, KS.  It is no small wonder why so many people fall in love with flowers as the subject for their photographs.  Flowers are a universal favorite, which have the power to mesmerize viewers.  With digital photo treatments, their beauty need not fade so quickly.

During his recent visit to Kansas, the Vice President was covered by the press for his speech regarding an economic stimulus allotment.  What the press did not cover was Joe Biden’s award winning performance in accomplishing a more obscure “hidden” agenda as evidenced by the following digital award presentation.  Way to go Joe.

My final offering of the week comes as a result of an inquiry about creating a specific type of digital calendar design.  This graphic is based primarily on functional utility and information, while also offering a pleasant esthetic theme without incorporating digital photos.  The 3-up calendar page also reduces the amount of page turning and costs associated with building a year’s worth of information on fewer pages.  Using this design in a digital picture frame is a nice way to display a calendar that will capture attention, and provide a lot of information at a glance.  Users only have to turn the page once every 3 months.
